Official Obituary of
Mary E. Payne
March 19, 1936 ~ November 5, 2024 (age 88)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother Mary Elizabeth Payne, who peacefully left us on November 5th, 2024 at the age of 88. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and spiritual wisdom.
Born March 19, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as Mary Gustives Resse later Mary Elizabeth Presberry to her adoptive parents Thomas, and Pauline Presberry. She grew up in her adored hometown of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, which she would proudly refer to as ''the mushroom capital of the world!''
In her youth, she enjoyed weekly outings to see 15-cent movies and meet up with her mother at the old dry goods in town to walk home, spent hours reading her favorite Polly Pigtails magazines while eating sweet oranges on her stool, and showcased her vocal talents by singing in her high school choir. A proud ''country girl,'' she had a deep appreciation for nature. Nana loved to collect stones, pinecones and leaves wherever she went, using them to create beautiful crafts to decorate her home, with the aspiration of selling them alongside her lovely handmade floral bouquets. Nana also enjoyed literature, classical music, and was keen on maintaining a tidy household. She believed there should be ''a place for everything, and everything in its place." She always styled her hair meticulously and ironed her clothes before going out. At times, she passed on her etiquette lessons to her children, often using phrases like ''GP makes PL''—Good posture makes a pretty lady! ensuring they were well-mannered and neatly groomed.
Reflecting on her many life experiences—from childhood to marriage and motherhood—Nana often laughed and said, ''I could write a book!'' She loved sharing her memories and had a dream of publishing the stories of her life one day. More than just a mother, she was a beacon of compassion, humility, and strength, the heart of our family. Always greeting everyone with a warm smile and open arms, she had a unique ability to make people feel special. Her love was unconditional, and she taught us the importance of empathy, the value of hard work, and the joy of simple pleasures. Her gentle spirit and resilient faith inspired us all.
Among her remarkable qualities, she was known for her determination and unwavering support for her family. She dedicated her entire life to caring for others often putting their needs before her own and going without to provide. Regardless of the challenges she faced, she always had a positive attitude and treasured her children dearly above all else. From her early career in nursing where she worked tirelessly to help others in their times of need, to her marriages and successfully raising her 10 children independently, she had a passionate faith in her devout prayer and commitment to the word of god throughout her life. this worship not only guided her through difficult times but instilled strong values in her family that will last for generations.
Mary is survived by her children Lewis Byrd, Michael Byrd, April Lake (Byrd), Lisa Haney (Byrd), Andrew Byrd, Cathrine Payne, Cordell Payne, Christopher Payne, Carolyn Slovak (Payne), Victoria Payne, her many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, friends, and brothers and sisters in the lord of churches Refuge, The new tabernacle of praise, and Bethlehem. though she will be profoundly missed we find comfort in knowing that she is home now with the lord and she will live on in our hearts. We are all truly blessed to have had her in our lives.
Rest in peace, dear Nana. You will forever be with us in spirit.
